From the materials used to the types of scaffold towers that are constructed, without all the fundamental scaffolding components, safe building or maintenance work from heights would not be possible. Fitting together like pieces of a puzzle, from the ground up, how the different parts fit together makes the systems structurally sound no matter where the scaffold is placed.

Providing customers with all the fundamental scaffolding components, we at Disc-O-Scaff have Kwikstage and Selflock scaffold systems made from SABS-approved materials.

Scaffolding Components for Structural Stability

Constructing a building needs a strong foundation, walls, support formwork, and beam work to provide a construct that is safe and sound. The same can be said for scaffold towers. The fundamental scaffolding components need to be used and put into place correctly for stability and safety.

  1. Base Plates and Base Jacks – base plates are essential in providing a solid footing for the scaffolding components. Standards or uprights are inserted into the base plates. The base jack provides vertical height adjustment of the standards.
  2. Standards or Uprights – standards connect the whole scaffold to the ground. Made from pipes or tubes, connected to the base plates, they ensure the equal distribution of the scaffold load.
  3. Ledgers or Runners – ledgers are placed between the standards to add further support and weight distribution. Running horizontally along the length of the scaffold, multiple bays are connected with ledgers at the back and in the front of the scaffold.
  4. Transoms or Bearers – main transoms provide support for the standards and platforms by holding them in position. Intermediate transoms, used for additional support, are attached to ledgers in between the main transoms.
  5. Boards – they form the working platform for scaffold towers and are used to support workers safely whilst working at heights. Additional safety features such as toe boards and guardrails are connected to the working platforms.
  6. Couplers – couplers are used to hold the scaffold components together. Fewer couplers are needed with system scaffolding as there are built-in connections.
  7. Braces – diagonal in shape, braces are used to reinforce the rigidity of the scaffold. They are critical in keeping scaffolds from collapsing or twisting.

Additional Scaffolding Components

Fundamentals aside, there are many components to scaffolding providing for easier access and simple use. Castor wheels transform static towers into mobile ones, hook-on ladders provide access to higher platforms, and pallets provide storage for easy handling of scaffolding products.
